DOGGIGAMI
2024
Doggigami is a series of origami-style poster illustrations that showcase popular dog breeds.
Every dog breed has a history and a place of origin. This collection uses paper art to showcase dog breeds in a minimalist yet vintage look.
OVERVIEW
The structure of every dog, from the ears to the tails, was abstractly illustrated using a photo reference.
Only the most popular dog breeds were considered in the selection process, with variation based on size, shape, and coat.
To achieve the origami look and feel, folds that replicate origami folds in paper were heavily relied upon to add depth to each illustration.
PROCESS
The illustrations first failed since each breed initially had a distinct style rather than being a whole that would complement one another.
I started using gradients more often in my illustrations, however it gave them a more abstract painting feel than an origami one.
Following the changeover, the illustrations relied heavily on the use of shadows, which created the appearance of folded paper.
The initial selection of typefaces was based on the personality and/or appearance of the breed: a slim serif design suited the Dachshund's long, slender frame, while the Welsh Corgi's lively, playful nature meant that the typeface was meant to appeal to its friendly, happy nature.
Transitiong from gradient to solid colors with shadow creasing.
FINAL
The concept of incorporating old maps of each breed's origin had a nostalgic vibe. The white oval cast beneath each dog, which is almost antique-looking, enables more focus on centering their faces and drawing onto the origami illustration.
